Start-ups i temps

Una enorme part dels negocis relacionats tecnològics es basen en la idea que no tenim temps perquè estem ocupats sent productius.
Compres, serveis i les accions més senzilles i de poc valor- rentar el cotxe- estan servint com a excusa per muntar el següent “Uber per…”.

Als carallots sembla els ha semblat un mèrit proclamar estar molt atrafegats i no tenir temps per res. És una excusa, un escut i un pedestal. Les noves tecnologies han augmentat aquesta dèria. És un error en el que caic sovint per tant més que criticar me l’estic auto-diagnosticant.

Aquesta setmana he llegit dos articles a Quarz que apunten a aquesta doble tendència; algunes start-ups només aprofiten el fet que les condicions de seguretat laboral han disminuït i altres faran que es perdin més llocs de treball dels que seran capaços de generar.

El segon no el trobo.

Com que ja em conec els arguments anti-anti-innovació i anti-ludites no els repetiré. Vaig assumir Schumpeter i la seva destrucció creativa fa anys.

Però hi ha algun dia que més enllà de creure en treballar fort i estalviar i innovar us demaneu què passarà amb les vostres vides o amb els del vostre voltant quan tingueu seixanta anys i deixeu d’estar preparats per treballar en un món molt competitiu que us envolta i que ja no us valora?

I encara us quedaran vint anys per viure.

Ahir un amic ben pagat i amb una bona feina m’ho deia.

Darrerament els excessos de la nit em porten dies següents molt miserables.

No puc pensar, totes les coses m’importen poc
Com que no tinc una feina regular ni obligatòria , aquesta incapacitat mental és més miserable. Al final haver de llevar-te, haver de parlar amb gent, haver de fer el que cal fer és un bon repel·lent.

La sensació de dia perdut és més manifesta.

Quan em passa això penso en buscar ajuda professional. Per mi hi ha un pas previ o simultani que és intentar detectar el que em funciona i el que no i centrar-m’hi.
Estic aprenent a fer bones eleccions. Algunes van contra la meva natura o contra el que han sigut els meus hàbits fins avui. És una feina que de moment se’m dóna millor des del pla teòric que el pràctic.

Sobre els terapeutes, passa que no trobes el què esperaves trobar i que un terapeuta no t’agrada. No és greu. No tots són iguals. Que jo escrigui això que durant tota la meva vida jove havia defensat que els terapeutes construeixen el seu negoci en dependències i que qui té bons amics no necessita psicòlegs , doncs és un empassa-t’ho amb totes les lletres.
La terapeuta que més m’ha agradat a la meva vida no parlava català, quasi ni anglès i parlava en alemany. Potser la part que m’interessava era que com que no entenia quasi res, tot venia per interpretació. Era bastant fàcil projectar el que deia.

Això em va ajudar ahir. A vegades no saps com dir-li a la cosa. Posar-li nom va bé. No cal ser un depressiu crònic per identificar alguns dels principis.


Hi ha una segona prova infal·lible. Antony and the Johnsons et sembla música alegre.

Criticar i tal.

Fa unes setmanes un article explorava perquè surt a compte ser dur, cínic, cru online. Sones més llest.

Passa el mateix quan acabes una obra de teatre.

Quan acabes un àpat.

Quan acabes una sèrie.

La posició per defecte és que no t’agradi massa perquè tot el teu coneixement i experiència prèvia et capaciten per ser crític.

A mi em passa. Sóc un públic menys entusiasta del que de fet m’agradaria i això és un demèrit. Estic aprenent a que quan no m’agrada alguna cosa simplement no dir-ne res perquè criticar és tan fàcil.

La gent genuïnament brillant són els entusiastes, els que extreuen de qualsevol experiència , una espurna de brillantor, un pensament d’alçada i respecten tota la feinada que hi ha al darrera i en parlen com si l’autor estigués davant.

L’única forma de crítica que accepto és la que es fa a la cara amb les mateixes paraules amb les que s’ha escrit per darrera.

Ara està de moda criticar allò que fa en Sorkin. No he vist la tercera temporada de Newsroom però els que es queixen es queixen del de sempre: no és real, és moralista, els diàlegs són perorates i és ingenuament d’esquerres.

Un dels personatges del John Updike a Couples li diu al altra:
“Ja sabem que ets intel·ligent, no cal que et facis el reaccionari per semblar-ho”.

Les actituds generoses, socialitzants, que posen límit a la llibertat d’empresa i atenció a les desigualtats tenen una part tova en elles. Com que no són de tauró, semblen d’ovella.

Els tripijocs són obvis (sovint verbalitzats pels propis protagonistes). I aquí hi ha part de la gràcia. Clar que els personatges no parlen com parlem nosaltres (per sort).

L’arrogància i la manca absoluta de modèstia poden ofendre. La recerca constant de la gratificació directa de l’audiència  gràcies a identificar audiència amb gent ben llegida i molt articulada és potser massa constant. L’alliçonament. La moral tan present.

Però és que es trata d’això.

Sorkin vol un món millor. Sorkin és un pedagog, un pedagog pesat a estones, perquè ambiciona pujar el sostre del debat i no ho fa subtilment sinó amb cascades de verbositat.

No cal que t’agradi el que fa, per mi el que caldria és que el critiquéssim tenint en compte el que ja sabem que fa.

Ser cínic és més fàcil. Fer històries de traficants i assassins mentiders i amorals, filmar la decadència, enregistrar la tristor i tot allò sense sentit i que preferim digerir en ficció és més fàcil. Fer-ne bromes o ensenyar-ho cruament. Qualsevol opció amb l’horror ben present és inmediatament més senzilla perquè la ficció actua de pantalla i escut . I perquè quan ja ets cínic és més complicat que siguin cínics contra tu.

En canvi el què explica el Sorkin segurament preferiríem veure-ho i viure-ho en directe. Perquè fins els que critiquen suposo que voldrien que la gent que envolta el primer ministre o que fa les notícies fos loquaç i compromesa i íntegre i brillant com els personatges totalment irreals que apareixen a les seves històries.

Quan Sorkin escriu s’està exhibint. Clar.

I have been listening to the the work. -www.byronkatie.com –
It is indeed a good experiment for (self) awareness and a good mental exercise.
It looks somehow a combination of:

Cynicism- It insists a lot on not trying to interfere, judge, or change the reality that surrounds you or the people who is around you. Just take reality as it is, even when is unkind and cruel. Your opinions will not change this harshness.

Angelical- The whole point is to try not to engage too much with your own thoughts or judgments, see that everything are projections of yourself and as a consequence just a kind of mirage with few relevance. Take things light and take them all. Smile.

To me there are some matters hard to digest:

– If I can take anything and nothing harms me and nothing makes a difference then I could potentially live with everything, it would not matter who to love or who to spend time with, since my opinions and my tastes are not relevant I could take anyone. As a consequence I find the system a way to devaluate love.

– If I can take everything, then I can also take all the bad parts of life. I can just suck it up and live with it. As a consequence it could be that I never quit nothing, I never look for change, I never say to myself “this is not good for you”. In this way, the system can bring me to being to steady, to take anything, just a guy with shinny eyes seeing how his life develops in front of him without any control or will.

– If I can take anything, then I cannot improve or I cannot try to make a change. I am not talking about big words like “everybody should love everybody “ more like things like “this guys should not rob me”. If nothing has any value, if it is non of my business then maybe I am happier in my numb world but i am for sure not a mother of change.

– If I am the only one who does that, and around me I am surrounded by assholes (it is not my case but it could be) then I am giving them an advantage and they could take a profit join me. Again if I am absolutely in peace, that might not be important for me but is clearly not a pursue of the general good.

I like the idea of our feelings based on concepts that hurt us. I enjoy filling the papers because they make my knowledge grow but I disagree with the outcome to that. I think you can have different reactions to just sip it and smile. For me this is just a step for those who has too many troubles with too many things or high levels of anxiety and a nice operation to use once on a while but I find it less interesting from the operational point of view.

Some more thoughts on production

I spent part of my September on a photo shoot for a german car manufacturer.

I had the privilege to work with a really good photographer and crew. I hired a couple of new P.A’s and I should have sent them this notes in advance. Since I did not, I send them now.

– don’t fuck it up on your last day.

– don’t sit.

– don’t give ideas unless stated otherwise.

– double check but do not ask things twice.

– write things down. and if things are just said on voice, write them down and send them by email.

– do not expect nobody to understand that is hard to get internet on location.

– truck drivers will always come up with difficult requests. be ready.

– have always sweets on set.

– they can maybe drink alcohol. you cannot.

– give the people you are buying things to the sense of emergency and importance that your boss will apply to you.

– eat faster than your clients. sit the last one, stand up the first. the average lunch duration should be 12 minutes.

– the only way to control a situation is to send more frequent emails than your client/boss.

– when you need to be a booss, be a bit of a pain. everybody remembers everything until they forget it.

– save yourself the hangovers. they are hard to work with.

– always work considering you will not get paid before 60 days.

– if you are on set; 1) work, 2) pretend or 3) hide.

– your voice should be always lower than the one on top of the pyramid (photographer or director)

– your chat should always be kept under a security distance from the maximum concentration area (camera).

– people talk a lot on set. increase quality by talking less. and yes watsapping counts as chatting.

– use the walkie talkie as it would cost one euro each time you press the button.

– papers are meant to be read, carefully.

– if you think your job is to forward emails to other people , you are doing it wrong.

– the only one who can forward an email without reading and understanding it is the executive producer.

– if your assistants fails, you are the one responsible.

– pressure handling is the only valuable scale to evaluate how good a film/tv professional is. all the rest is wind.

– you need to know what you are not good at. hire people who are better than you doing that.

–  if you are not an executive don’t Instagram, Facebook or Tweet any graphic material from any job you are doing.

– lots of this rules don’t apply to executive producers. they can decide the way then want to lose a client. you don’t.

– you will always think a production designer is doing few and getting really well paid. this might be a good sign of him being good.

– treat a bit bad the camera department and they will get back to you strong and all union and rights for the working class and overtime warriors. treat them like pure shit and they will accept your conditions.

– don’t try to make a gaffer understand you. he is a knight of the light.

– a gaffer will always take one spark more than the ones necessary. you should do the same with PA’s.

– try to get always at least a girl, a big guy, a guy who understand tools, and a guy who understand computers in your production/location/ad team.

– AD’s are overrated.  AD’s are overconfident and they need that so they can do their job. AD’s want to be  your alpha in the pack. Let them be.

– sound recordists smoke and suffer often. Take care of them well.

– ask your DIT to deliver you a copy of what is in each disk so you never have a the most horrible discussion; the one on missing files.

– you will know a bad camera crew because they will hire a hot and lousy female VTR.

– make up people get often bored. Their fee compensate their deep and constant boredom.

– wardrobe people need to be rock stars.

Guys , welcome to this business

CC your enemy

I am trying to CC as few as possible.
If I send an email, I am expecting the people who receives it to read it. This is not always happening when we get around 50 emails in carbon copy a day.
I stopped to read them in a certain moment of my life, which led me to one of the biggest mistakes in my career. It was a dreadful experience and I will not repeat it. So I read everything now. I read it carefully and taking notes. Most of the is wasted time because most of the content in emails (specially in certain industry) has a value of only 24 hours.
Still nowadays some of my boss demand to be in cc about everything. Every single communication. Every detail. I can imagine some of my boss get hundred emails as an average per day. Read them and you will be drained by when you turn forty. I am talking about people who trust me , who let me decide about some thousands of euros here and there, and still they want it. They get upset if I don’t cc them.
To me not cc’ing is a mark of respect. For sure I will cc you if there is an issue. I will call you, ask you, look for advice. But in the same way that I try not to bother the people who are below me with stupid cc’s , I would do the same with the ones who I have above.
It is no doubt one of the worse practices of corporate Europe. What once might have been working in a more direct, talkative, humorous or straight rash way, now is full of willing to do and as much as possible and buts. And cc’s.
It is a kind of language that everybody uses but nobody claims fatherhood; english claim they would be more ironic and use a bit more fucks and damns, americans that they would be much brief, germans that they sound like that but they write in german, frenchman that they prefer metaphorical language and circular sentences, spanish that they prefer to write the way they talk. And still, above a certain level of power all of us write the same way. And on top of that uniform way of language we use a second shell in the form of cc.
I would only cc bomb my worse enemy. Because is the worse way of communication. Most of times don’t care and if you do is probably partially too late, because the email has been sent.

New Steady App From Stupeflix Shoots Video With Cinematic Stabilization

Last year Instagram made its first acquisition, buyingY Combinator company Luma which had come up with an app which could stabilize normally shaky video. It needed this stabilisation technology for obvious photographic reasons, leaving the way open for a new company to take its place.

Steady is a new app from long-time online video startup Stupeflix, which has slowly but surely been building up a stack of very interesting video-related IP over the last few years. If there is a company which has both created a big idea platform and stayed under the radar, it’s Paris-based Stupeflix. And it’s barely raised money – from both Seedcamp and S500 Startups.

The Steady app allows you to shoot action videos from your iPhone with almost cinematic stabilization. The resulting videos are editable and sharable, can be shot in slo-mo (iPhone5 & up) and created in square or 16:9 recording…

Fa temps que observo, en mi i en algunes amistats properes, que com més por tenim a alguna cosa, més l’anem preparant, més anem disposant tots els elements perquè passi. Suposo que alguns hòmens busquem el col·lapse per deixar de patir. Uns altres, veig, volen solucionar un problema creant-se un daltabaix, si pot ser irrevocable. Aquests busquen el col·lapse per no haver de decidir, per fer que triïn les circumstàncies. Estic superat, diuen aquests a l’amic, i es deixen atropellar pel camí fàcil.

A l’Evangeli segons Sant Lluc hi ha un passatge en què un deixeble pregunta a Jesús si són molts o pocs els qui se salven. I ell respon ‘esforçeu-vos a entrar per la porta estreta’. Hi penso molt, en la porta estreta, en la meva porta estreta, en aquest forat de la nit, quan vénen tots els fracassos a recordar-se’m i  se’m barregen els pànics d’avui -que es fan grans, immensos…

THE 100TH ANIVERSARY OF THE KIEL INSTITUTE FOR THE WORLD ECONOMY

I have to admit I am stubborn and childish sometimes.
When I knew that the Kiel Institute was celebrating its 100 years of existence and organizing some events I thought it may mean that they wanted to celebrate with me too. I was wrong.

On February I asked about the calendar to a really specific email address called “events”. I got no answer. Maybe because I was asking in english? Well I cannot believe it. The Kiel institute is ranked 7th in economic Think Tanks around the world. It can’t work just in german.

Then there was the conference from two weeks ago. Read the program and tell me that you would not like to attend.

Say it. No way. It looked just delicious, inspiring, full of information. So I wrote again. This time I got a short answer. “Which is your background?”. I answered. As humble and motivated as possible. I imagined that if they answered they could let me sit at the end of the room, taking notes and feeding my brain. I spend a good hour in the answer. And I got no more answer from the events mailbox.

I understand that some conferences are just for members, in which case my background does not matter. And I also understand there are other conferences where you need to pay, in this case my background would be of not use either. It is harder for me to understand how an email which is called events can stop to give information.

It is the third time that I try to attend some activity organized by the Kiel Institute and I got not just a no as an answer but no answer at all. I hope and expect the Institute treats better those who want to be their sponsors , and in case I may be a sponsor in the form of tax payer, then I am really disappointed. I could not figure this point out due to the not so clear corporate information on their page.

As proved enough, the administration or members of the Institute are only interested in the transmission of knowledge between those who make a living on learning and reading and not for those who are part of the productive economy who they claim to study. Oh, the irony.
